That 3rd panel (blue background) was an interesting challenge. It was definitely a trial and error, building on each iteration until I got to something I liked kind of process. In total, I sent David 4 different versions.
Someone said, “You can tell the bad guys from the good guys by whether they use others as shields or make themselves shields for others.” (Paraphrased in order to take in the non-human inhabitants of Terragard. )
Pardon me for asking, but you wouldn’t happen to be related to the Stones? I ask because the Jews in the family came over from the UK in the mid 1900s and the family name was Stone.
Not that I’m aware of, “Johanan Rakkav” is a pen name (Biblical Hebrew tweaked by King James Version-style spelling conventions) that I adopted in Hebrew class back in the mid-1980′s. What can I say, I love biblical Hebrew and its reading tradition (which is why I took up the language in the first place).
There are tens of thousands in the U.S. alone who have my given name, and it’s as Anglo-Saxon as it gets (although my mother’s side is largely Scottish). So far as I know, there’s only one Johanan Rakkav.
I understand; I picked a… ahem… “different” nom-de-plume for my latest book (went on sale last night). I picked it for several reasons, but one of the main ones is that my real name is so incredibly commonplace.
It’s not even on my website yet (I haven’t updated it yet). http://www.createspace.com/3907401 Even the cover doesn’t seem to be showing up!
For your specific interest, here’s what started my studies back in 1982 (WARNING FROM CAPTAIN OBVIOUS: it has nothing whatsoever to do with this epic)…
SpaceCop, I think you’re probably right.
Thanks, Billbarians! This strip was quite collaborative with Don. I knew what I wanted in that bottom middle panel but didn’t quite know how to articulate it. I had drawn a different effect. Don played with it and sent me 4 differing versions to choose from, and he NAILED what I was wanting to acheive with Warrix’s spinning teleport. Don, you ROCK!
I am so excited about the coming storyline, as we inch closer to some characters we have not seen in far too long… and new revelations come to light, and answers (and possibly new questions?) Hm…
NOW you’ve done it, Warrix. Shiarra’s going to send herself, Gnome 12 (and maybe the whole Syndicate with him), Bill, Mrs. Minotaur AND Sarah the Psychotic Barwench after your sorry hide.
Oh, yeah. New questions. Certainly. We don’t have enough of those already …
“YO! Agents 23 and 27! Open up a wormhole in the back of that last, unused broomcloset. Looks like a new shipment of questions on the way. Can you make the other end of that wormhole open onto a empty planet? Don’t want to run out of space for at least another couple of months …”
SpaceCop already beat me to it … my first reaction is that Tall Dark and Fugly has reason to fear Shiarra. You do NOT leave a loose end like that wandering around if you can take her out Right Now.
Not only do I like panel #3, I like the whole transition going on in panel #2 and the vanishing finish in panel #3. Final panel though … I kinda disagree. I don’t think Shiarra would have been quite so shocked, more like disgusted and pissed. I’d have thought a cold, cold glare and muttering to herself something like “No worries, brother. You have nowhere to run.”
He’s already sucked her magic dry and the gnome’s too – have you considered that he has the upper hand, he knows it and is merely toying with her cat-and-mouse style? Finish her off then and there: good. Finish her off later with more style and cruelty: better.
Pardon the analogy but this reminds me of a joke/parable I was told long ago. Two bulls were on a hill looking down at a pasture full of cows. The young bull said eagerly, “Let’s run down the hill and grab one!” The old bull replied, “Let’s WALK down the hill and grab ‘em all.”
Warrix has something up his magically-overengineered sleeve, COUNT on it. Otherwise, he WOULD’VE taken her out then and there.
OK, is this playful litte quip by Warrix suppose to ingratiate him to me or something? Are you planning to launch a series of Warrix plushies and are only now attempting to soften the market attitude toward that guy?
.
That said, I like the way this is going. And I think Warrix is hoping he will get someone to follow him into whatever trap he has prepared at the other end.
In a parallel universe, Warrix and Shiarra are sitting in the back seat of the Heavenly Chariot being driven by the Mother Goddess (or whoever spawned them):
“He touched me!” (FROST) “No, I didn’t!” (ZAP) “Make him stay on his side, Mom!” (SCRUNGE) “She started it!” (ABSORB)
Is that “NO!!” as in “No, don’t take my cute little dragon away!” or “NO!!” as in “No, I’m *not* going to play your silly game and chase you to The Underworld and back!”?
Thanks Pixie.
I’m really liking how this particular story arc is turning out. The detail that David has put into the strips (especially the larger ones) has let me add more detailed colors than usual. This particular story arc is my favorite one so far.
Princess Gina has mysteriously vanished (and let’s not forget the whole shared memory thing).
Bill has been whisked away by a wizard.
Frank has just been snatched by Warrix.
Our new friends and allies (Giles and Shiarra) have either had their powers drained or suppressed.
So, it would appear that the bad guys are definitely a step or two ahead of the good guys, the party is scattered and there’s no immediate plan of action.
Johanan,
While Gypsy is also no longer with the party, I never considered her as one who would be in it for the long haul. She’s more of an oracular character, one who provides useful information to the heroes, but doesn’t physically aid them on their quest. Though, due to circumstances beyond her control, it would appear that she could be physically aiding them yet. Time will tell.
As far as Ganyon goes, who knows? Wizards are a curious lot, aren’t they? Always popping about, upsetting the order of things and then popping away again.
Love the Photoshop smear effect. (liquify?) Put to much greater use in this comic than I do. I just make “pretty” background with it.

outstanding
That’s a neat image.
Impressive. MOST impressive.
(directed to YOU in James Earl Jones’ voice backed by appropriate breathing apparatus noises)
“You’ll find that I’m full of surprises.”
FRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANKKKKKKKK {yesh i know it wont work but this is the perfect time for it}
and now comes the chase… but will be ice queen doing the chasing or will it be the gnome….
dang it i had the mental image of kirk doing the khan yelling. when i made the post of frank going bye bye
I can see them reaching Warrix’ domicile, not seeing Warrix but seeing Frank with a distended belly, going “burp!”
Only *burp*? I think he’d be puking his little blue guts out.
Good point! (I hadn’t considered the results of a dragon eating something EEWWWW like Warrix).
He shows up, kidnaps somebody smaller, and runs away: real tough guy.

whoops
The dude is not stupid. Probably knows her strength and wants to be fighting on his own turf. Tactics.
On the other hand….FRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANK!
Agree with Herr David below: spot on-analysis, that.

I get any more questions from this strip and I’m going to have to change my name to Edward Nigma. SHEESH!
Or Iggy Nore, take your pick.
I LIKE!
Did they just got flushed? Frank is gonna be a long time in hell before the queen and the gnome follow through the inn’s sewers…
Interesting. I figured Warrix would try to take Shiarra on right then and there…
warrix wanted his own frank plush toy
frank plush toys are just for kids. sorry warrix.
so the villain steals the real frank. he is so evil
Now, why didn’t I think of doing that?
Aw, no fair! This can’t be good…

That’s a terrible thing to say about Shiarra! I’m fairly sure that she isn’t a “loose end”.

Don’t forget that they are brother and sister, so who knows what kind of sibling rivalry exists between them.
Yup, pretty much what I imagine.
*LOL*
Is that “NO!!” as in “No, don’t take my cute little dragon away!” or “NO!!” as in “No, I’m *not* going to play your silly game and chase you to The Underworld and back!”?
I think that Shiarra’s “No!” Is more of an expression of shock, her magic is currently suppressed and now Warrix and Frank are gone.
OMG you guys! I am totally blown away by the story line the art work and the coloring! Fabulous.
Oh and P.S.
FRANK….NNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! *pounds lil Pixie Chest*
Thanks Pixie.

Hey, settle down! It’s not so bad, let’s review:
Princess Gina has mysteriously vanished (and let’s not forget the whole shared memory thing).
Bill has been whisked away by a wizard.
Frank has just been snatched by Warrix.
Our new friends and allies (Giles and Shiarra) have either had their powers drained or suppressed.
So, it would appear that the bad guys are definitely a step or two ahead of the good guys, the party is scattered and there’s no immediate plan of action.
GAAAHHHHHHH!!!!
If that’s “not so bad”, I’d hate to see your idea (or David’s) of utter calamity.
Aren’t you forgetting the General and Gypsy?
Not to overlook a whole cast of oddballs, including He Who Inspires Your Avatar?
Johanan,
While Gypsy is also no longer with the party, I never considered her as one who would be in it for the long haul.
“No!” …like “No, I won’t catch you! Take the blue dragon, I’m gonna have a beer wif me mate Giles ‘ere.”
JK – love your work.
