If the sheer Labor of Love Factor is any indication, apparently so. But tavern brawls are always more fun than gory beheadings and maulings anyway, especially when a not-so-ditzy blonde is involved.
The first two panels are truly beautiful — the poses, the angles of view, the expressions, everything — I immediately thought “Book cover art.” It immediately grabbed my attention..
The emanations from Shiarra’s eyes are fascinating. They convey fantastic power but the effect is understated (in keeping with Shiarra, herself). The more I look, the more I find in details, subtle shading, color treatment, and more and more. Beautiful work David and Don! … But don’t hurt your arms patting yourself on the back; it’s hard to draw and color with your arm in a sling. We need you in good shape for more of this wonderful stuff!
The only thing missing is that instant of realization when, as an orc, you realize that she decided she didn’t need backup to whoop your ass.
.
Great work guys!
The problem is that there are so many jaws to deal with at the moment! Really I would’ve preferred a solid right-handed Kamehameha Wave or equivalent knocking those jokers back to whatever compost heap they crawled out of.
…and that’s a solid “the OTHER right” to the jaw, which means she pulled up her staff with her left hand, was firing up a pulse with her right, then engaged her staff with both hands, then switched hands with her staff and switched off her most spectacular magic, then delivered a haymaker… will someone explain to me again how even Cartoon Physics (“Only When It’s Funny”) managed to help her pull this off?!
Thats why she’s the Frost Queen, beautiful, powerful and quick! I imagine that not only is she talented in the magical arts, shes also knowledgeable in the martial arts.
Panel #2 … gorgeous! There’s always that moment when a girl looks deep and meaningfully into your eyes … and, you know for certain that you are in love. Or about to be dead. Well, not that those possibilities are necessarily mutually exclusive …
Panel #4 … looks like Shiarra has been taking Facial Expressions, advanced courses, from Zona and Xena.
Tom Teeth needs a new name. Perhaps Thom Thoof ..?
As fast as Tom Tooth and the Rotten Dentition were coming at her in our last episode, I’m just amazed she even had the time to switch these horses in the middle of the stream. Unless, of course, she can stop time for others or move at variable rates through time herself.
Whatever the cause, it’s unexpected, epic, and hilarious.
When my character brings up a white glow in his hand like that, you can bet it won’t be a knuckle sandwich that’s cutting loose in the next millisecond. Not as funny as here, but I would’ve LOVED to see Shiarra do that, in the best DRAGONBALL Z tradition.
You need a Northwestern European from the coastlands, not a Slav as you keep throwing at us. Look at the shape of the nose, face, chin and other things. Nordic, Saxon, some Celtic women will do – Shiarra reminds me of a meaner version of a too-beautiful blonde of that sort that I used to know (and who used to like me back in the day, who knows why).
Sorry. I like Czechs, Poles and Italians. My favorites tend to be Celtic redheads, admittedly. (I also have to admit the best looking woman I’ve ever me was a Playmate from Australia. Talk about a bubbly personality. I didn’t have a clue what to do when she tried to pick me up, either, being 19 and having grown up in an…ahem… extremely Feminist area of the country.)
I’ve just never appreciated blondes that much because of how so many of them acted in this part of the country. A Swedish exchange student that I was best friends with in college was an obvious exception, but she wasn’t snotty or egomaniacal like the local women tended to be, either. There’s nothing worse than a beautiful woman who has a bobcat’s personality.
The question isn’t what type appeals to you or me personally the most, the question is what type looks most like Shiarra. On that I can be objective indeed.
The Swede… is closer to the mark. Can Shiarra tan?
Actually, i’ve been picking them as real-life examples because of how they look.
For example, “denni” in the photo from earlier had a sharp nose and a narrow face. It’s hard to find people in real life who have blade-like noses like Shiarra or these other characters do. Most noses are more rounded. Faces can be anything from broad to narrow.
So long as you can ALSO tell that we (or some of us) want to see Shiarra actually use some of those fireworks on somebody on some point. If using it on Warrix is more funny than using it on mere Orcs, we’ll wait.
I meant to comment on this page when it first came up. I just want to tell you how awesome the second panel is. The way her face is framed and the way you drew her eyes is so captivating. Wonderful, wonderful job. It just makes my day when I see a new LoB comic up, keep up the awesome work!
WoW!!
I like this gal! LOL
This is awesome! Great comic and amazing colors gentlemen. Thank you
Thank you Pixie!! – This one was a lengthy one to color.
So. Much. Hair.
If she only wore it in a ponytail, it would have been much easier, though it would have been much less dramatic.
Be grateful. The Orcs could’ve had hair too.
As with the others, I say: excellent job, your enjoyment shows in your work.
The art just keeps getting better and better. You guys are doing great.
I love the detail on the orcs/goblins, great wrinkles and warts!
And in the next update, bruises, cuts, and fractures.
next update, a row of coffins for the scout troop
I love playing spell casters in role-playing games, but I’ve never ditched a spell to beat somebody with my staff. Am I doing it wrong?
TCB: Taking Care of Business!
“Sock it to me”
I really like how this one turned out, and I’d have to say that this particular story arc (Shiarra vs. The Goblins) is so far my favorite LoB arc.
If the sheer Labor of Love Factor is any indication, apparently so. But tavern brawls are always more fun than gory beheadings and maulings anyway, especially when a not-so-ditzy blonde is involved.
Looking at those teeth: yeeeooouuucchhhh!
Oops. I put this in the wrong spot. It was a reply to J.Rakkav’s comment on Tom Tooth’s teeth.
It would be great to have an edit function…

Great work guys!
I think Tom Tooth realized that the moment he got hit on one side and got his teeth busted on the other. Now THAT’S a piece of work.
JR = also focus on the crumpled nose.
And the blood drops flying from somewhere.
I just noticed that Shiarra didn’t even bother to use her staff. Orc = Wuss-O-Matic!
Oh, yes, and Shiarra’s change of mind in panel three is a gas!
“From the icy depths I call upon…screwit!”
Nefarious!
SO bada$$.
Why waste Mana when you got STR and DEX off the charts.
Woohoo!
Aw, really? I was looking forward to orcsicles…
Still totally kickass, though.
Hahaha, LOVE that! Why waste magic when you can pummel someone?
Great work guys!
is ‘icey’ correct English? otherwise, AWESOME page! and i love lennier’s comment – we already know that dave does great after-the-battle bruises…
icy
yes, there are magic spells, but you cant go wrong with classics, like a solid right to the jaw

And as mentioned elsewhere, apparently able to slow down time for others or to speed up time for herself.
watching the Frost Queen’s moves, it reminds me a line from The Mikado. “I have a little list, of those who won’t be missed!”
That Girdle of Frost Giant Strength comes in handy…
Love the concussive effect crumbling Tom’s teeth all the way on the other side of his mouth.

Hahaha- this one really made me laugh out load! Love this Icequeen!
A model named “Denni” for the film version?

Well then, how about a Swede (Sara Lund)?

Fairies wear boots and you gotta believe me …
Hahaha! i love her attitude
Yay! Good she can use fistacuffs. It would make sense for Ulrik to have the minions sent to collect magical creatures be a bit resistant to magic.
Ah, you may have it in one: that ace in the hole some of us were wondering about after a while.
Thanks so much for all the great comments, friends! Yes, some extra love goes into every strip, I’m glad you can tell.
So long as you can ALSO tell that we (or some of us) want to see Shiarra actually use some of those fireworks on somebody on some point. If using it on Warrix is more funny than using it on mere Orcs, we’ll wait.
thanks again for providing webcomic awesomeness
I believe I speak for the whole world when I say:
Dave, we love this new character!
And I believe I speak for the whole Orc species when I say: We HATE this young-looking, shape-shifting old broad!
I think we’ve just added TWO new layers of meaning to the phrase, “knocked out cold”!!!
Ummm so where is todays strip
