Ah yes, the poor redshirt:

The Enterprise encounters an unknown phenomena. Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty, Checkov, Sulu, Uhura and ensign Jensen beam down to the planet. Some alien/monster/disease attacks them and Jensen vaporized/eaten/turned into a polyhedron.

It was this basic plot device that made Galaxy Quest such an awesome movie.
