A change of pace with some realistic sketching in the sketchbook of secrets
on November 11th, 2010Posted In: blog
Like a singer changes genres of music sometimes, so to does a cartoonist need to switch it up and practice other things to better understand the deceptively simple values of their cartooning… so I’ve been in the mood for a change of style and pace in ye olde sketchbook, here’s a peek at something I started yesterday… (I’ll show more if I finish more of it!)

Hi David — It’s wonderful! I’d noticed some of your more realistic sketches & work buried in the archives here. Bits & pieces on some other sketchbook leaves, and also clicked through some of your portfolio/other pages. I knew you had this in you; I’m really envious.
I’ve played with sketching enough to know how poor my poor skillz iz, and I’ve been around enough artisans to know just how hard it is to develop a comic style, and to produce it consistently & well. Very deceptive how much goes into a strip like LoB. Only seems simplistic at the surface.
Thanks for sharing your works with us.
And, BTW, if you’re ever looking for a side-project to push your skillz ..? It would be very interesting to see your ‘Real World’ take on how some of the LoB characters might look when not in their ‘production make-up,’ so to speak. Even the “extras” on the set (like Sarah or a Gnome, dragon, etc.) might be a lot of fun in lieu of a main actor/actress.
Wonderful sketch David!!! Looks like classic Greek or Roman art!!!
Thanks guys, much appreciated! Yeah. I get a hankerin’ to play in my more realistic style now and again… more to come, to be sure.
Is this straight out of your head or did someone pose for you? Either way, is awesome
