1000 points to the first person who can tell me who sang that song (no Googling… the gnomes will tell me if you do)
2000 points to whomever can sing (or type) the next line!
Give it up for Don’s excellent coloring as always!

I’m probably wrong, but wasn’t that Cher’s first solo hit after she left Sonny?
Okay, according to this, she was still married to Sonny. But I got it mostly right…mostly…
i could be wrong, but i think she was still with sonny at that point . . .
and i think the next line is . . . gypsies, tramps and thieves, but every time we’d come to town, they’d lay their money down . . . or some such . .
- really wants imaginary points
that was Cher all right.
reynard61 beat me to it
Yeppers, that was one of Cher’s signature hits way back when.
Oops… next line (without looking it up) … Gypsies, tramps and thieves, but every night the men would come around, and they’d lay their money down.
Yep, it’s Cher and the song is actually called Gypsies, tramps and thieves and the next line is: gypsies, tramps and thieves but every night all the men would come around and put their money down.
Once again, the funniest things are the ones that are implied.
…or so I keep telling myself. I WANTED TO SEE THAT DANCE! DAGNABBIT!
“Gypsies tramps and thieves. But every night all the men would come around, and lay their money down”
Want further? I gots it almost memorized. XD
Cher…
gypsies, tramps and thieves but every night all the men would come around bnd lay their money down…
always loved that song
Cher I know to be true.
I think it’s:
“Gypies, Tramps and Thieves, but when the sun went down, they brought their money ’round.”
I know that is the end of the chorus
Is it “Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves” by Cher?
or in my own alternate lyrics “Bee-Knees, Bats & Thieves”.
“… gypsies, tramps and thieves, but every night they’fd come around, and lay their money down.”
You’re correct reynard but as to the next line of the song, I’m stumped.
I know the joke works better with the gypsy out of sight but I ‘m feeling let down because I can’t see her shake her groove thang. I want to feel dirty too. And, of all places, why isn’t that watchful gnome here where the obvious exposition (wink) is? Maybe he’s seen it all before.
Yep. Cher it was.
But every night all the men would come around
And lay their money down
Cher
@David: DUDE! You’re now TWO going on THREE strips behind on GoComics! What giveth?
@reynard61: According to Wikipedia, Cher had two #1 solo hits with “Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves” and “Half Breed” and a #7 with “Dark Lady” before the duo broke up and before the couple divorced. I remember seening “Half Breed” on the duo’s television show.
It was Cher, but I don’t know about it being her first solo after Sonny. I like that song.
However, I cannot recall the next line, unless it is simply gypsies, tramps, and thieves all over again.
Yeah, I knew the singer was Cher right off…and now, from memory…
Gypsies, tramps and thieves
But every night all the men would come around
And lay their money down
I believe she was still with Sonny, I do know she did some solo work parallel to the Sonny & Cher stuff and that song did predate their TV show… I could be wrong, but… for 2000 points…
Gypsies, tramps and thieves… but every night all the men would come around, and put their money down…
It was a Cher song but she first sang it on the varity show that she and Sonny had back in the “70s….. Yes I am old enough to had watched it whe it was new! LOL
The song is Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves. It was sung by Cher and the next line is of the town, they’d call us …. Gypsies, tramps and thieves, but every night them men would come around and lay their money down… Bammm! So I like the older music verses the stuff they call music now! Outstanding work you do here. Let me guess, you drinking some bottles of Dr. Good?
Cher
…but every night the men would come around and lay their money down.
“…And every night the men would come around, and lay their money down…”
Ah. Nostalgic.
Nothing like a pop song about prostitution and living a dead-end life. So uplifting.
It was Cher and the next line is “Gypsies, tramps and thieves, but every night all the men would come around … and lay their money down.”
Yes it was Cher, who went on to sing:
Gypsies, tramps and thieves,
But every night all the men would come around
And lay their money down
Gypsies, Tramps and theives but every night the men would come and lay their money down (or something to that effect)
Yes, this was Cher’s big post Sonny break.
I think the next line goes “Gypsies, tramps and thieves, but every night all the men would come around, and lay their money down.”
It’s one of those annoyingly catchy tunes, too. It’s now stuck in my head.
I was pretty sure it is a Cher song as well … but I drink in the mornings so who knows ..
Cher–”Gypsies, tramps and thieves, and every night all the men would come around, and lay their money down!”
Cher.
Gypsies, tramps and thieves. And every night when the sun was going down…
Cher
It was Cher, Reynard. And the lyrics continue…
Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves
But every night all the men would come around
And lay their money down.
(Remember, I do karaoke QUITE well, Dave.
)
You’re not wrong.
“…gypsies, tramps, and thieves.
But every night all the men would come around,
and lay their money down.”
Reynard is correct Cher sans Sonny in 197?. Just received the LOB comic. Fantastic. First comic I’ve bought since 1980.
1. Cher.
2. Gypies, tramps and thieves. But ev’ry night all the men would come around….and lay their money down……
I can’t imagine what she did with the plates … or better, I fear to imagine that … fear of feeling dirty too …
Cher.
G., T & T….But every night they all would gather round and lay there money down.
sigh ‘their’ money.
Not enough coffee in me yet!
Yeah, it was Cher. Really, this was supposed to be hard? I guess I’m old.
Next line:”Gypsies, tramps and thieves – but at night, all the people’d come around, and lay their money down.” Or something like that.
Gypsies, tramps and thieves and every night all the men would come around, and lay their money down…….
Yeah Cher.
I was born in the back of a travelin’ show, my mamma used to dance for the money they’d throw…
Yes – it was Cher – & the next line is…
Gypsies, tramps and thieves, but every night the men would come around, and lay their money down.
I used to love this song!!
Cher.
But every night, the men would come around, and lay their money down.
Did Bill and Frank have to pay for that?
Cher sang the song.
Next Line: “Gypsies, tramps, and thieves, every night the men would come around, and lay their money down.”
Gypsies Tramps and theives but at night the men would come around….And lay their money down
P.S. Been lurking for months, love the strip but I could not pass up this challange. I love old Cher tunes.
Wait, it was “all the men would come around”. And no, I didn’t Google or look it up, I’m just that old.
Cher sang it and the lext line would be… Gypsies, tramps, and thieves, but every night when the sun was going down all the men were comin’ round
Pole dancing and diner plates!? Wish I could’ve seen that!
Gypsies, tramps and thieves! But every night all the men would come around… And lay their money down…
It is Cher, and this is my fave song by her.
Spinning plates are sometimes gimmicked, to help keep the plates on the poles. … This was a popular act on The Ed Sullivan Show and other American variety
Cher sang it and the next line is…
Gypsies, tramps, and thieves, but every night when the sun was going down all the men would come around…
or something along those lines.
I’m with Bill on this one…I feel unsanitary. And I REALLY don’t want to know what she did with those plates XP
o_o Whoa. She … actually did an interpretative exotic dance for Bill and little boy blue? But did they learn anything -about the Underlord-? I can imagine it being an education of a different sort, of course. Especially for Bill.
but everynight the men would come around, and lay their money down.
…but when the sun went down the men came around to lay their money down…
Or something like that. I only vaguely recall it
Great strip and a great webcomic today.
Do you have a 1/2 previous button, so we can see what happened between previous and now?
I’ve got to figure out that dinner plate trick.
It was Cher.
Gypsies, tramps and thieves, we’d hear it from the people of the town, they’d call us gypsies, tramps, and thieves. But every night all the men would come around and lay their money down.
My favorite line in that song is “Papa would have shot him if he knew what he’d done” You just knew she was headed for trouble at that point.
reynard61 WINS 1000 points!!!!!!!!!!!!
Zypher wins 2000 points!!!
Judging (cough) was scored based on exact accuracy (lol) of the song… While some of you awesome peeps who slipped in there first got the lyrics prettttty much accurate, they were missing either the word “all” (from “all the men” or it was all correct except the word “put” was in place of “lay.”
Aw, screw it – you got the gist. 10,000 POINTS FOR EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wowza. I woke up to 58 comments on this today. More contests!! LOL
geochemistry: LoB was the first comic you bought wince 1980?? I am most honored.
Please feel free to chime in anytime! We’re all just one big happy whacked-out barbaric family here!
Pixie: Thank you for peeking out from the shadows! Now if we could get those gnomes to follow suit.
Brad: Nope. It was a freebie.
Fear not, pals – we have still not seen the last of our new lil’ gypsy friend… she”s about to tell us lots of interesting stuff!
this time can we see the dance
P.S. Give it up for Don’s excellent coloring as always!
@tmcelmurry – I like the idea of the “1/2 previous” arrow!
. 62 comments so far, I think that might be a LoB comments record.
@David – Thank you sir.
@Everyone else – David and I got to see what happened between the strips, and you would feel dirty too if you saw what happened
@David I actually posted second but for some reason it took forever to show up. O.o;
But thank you. >.>; I actually DO have the entire song in my head, it’s been there for HOURS now.
Before they had dollar bills, what did they stick in the thongs of their strippers? Gold coins would be painful.
Dirty boy!
Will you think less of me if I admit that I actually have this song on my iPod???
Also, I think it was a very early episode of “Roseanne” where one of the kids tried to sing this song but they kept getting the lyrics mixed up and instead of “tramps & thieves”, they kept singing “chimpanzees”.
It got in my brain so much, I STILL hear “chimpanzees” even when Cher sings the song.
-Chris
Man am I glad I’m not the only one who could recall that Cher reference!
And Zak & Tacobob, it could be a lot worse. If we attempt to be historically accurate, they likely bartered for things. So the gypsy should be lucky Bil didn’t stuff a beaver pelt in her thong! o.O
And yes – I went for the double entendre, thank you very much! >.<
Tim, after reading your comment, now I feel dirty all over again. LOL
Well Spank I mean thank you for the welcome David!
Yes this is also one of my favorite old Cher songs. I think close second is Halfbreed. I remember the Sonny and Cher show…Yes I was a little girl when it aired but still….Damn it…I feel old now!
Oh and just FYI…My last comment was # 69 *blush* Naughty Pixie!
LOVE the colors Don…thank you!
And here I thought I’d posted right after the Fox. Guess not.
@David: You STILL haven’t answered my question! What giveth?
This utterly cool stuff should be on GoComics post-haste, unless the Dark Underlord is interferin’ somehow…:D
@Tim Allen (No, not the actor)
He could have at least stuffed Frank down there!
@ Tim Allen: Nice Beaver!
Thanks, I just had it stuffed.
Quick, another reference quiz, what movie is that line from??
One Word: LMAO!
Technically it’s 4 but my point stands.
@ SpacemanAttack
Naked Gun
@ Chris Flick
“Gypsy chimpanzees” ?? Eek. Return of the Lance Link: Secret Chimp nightmares.
Naughty, naughty Pixie. LOL

Johanan: Actually not sure why GoComics is behind again. Will check it out. But I will say I always keep my GoComics a week behind so as not to compete with LoB.com.
TacoBoB; EW! lol
Spaceman: Naked Gun.
mk15: Well done anyhoo!
msyendor: lol
Wow – some killer comments on this one, folks! I LIKEY!! I confess I get a HUGE kick out of checking to see if there are comments on strips. So THANK YOU!!!
That’s so naughty…
Had no idea about the song; I’m not unfamiliar with old music (am big on ’60s-’80s rock), just don’t know them all. Also, too young
@David: “…comments on strips.” Given the context, I’m LOL…
ok i may have missed it but the gnomes eyes seemed bugged out extra this time i think lol. plus the fact the she was a stripper was rather a surprize.
I’ve had some good laughs with this comic but this one was awsome. And yes, I want to feel dirty too…
I’m surprised no one caught the extra I tossed into the strip last night.
GNOOOOOOOME!!
@Pixie – Thanks.
@David – I noticed, but that probably doesn’t count
@David: That’s because I haven’t LOOKED at the strip since last night, before that GNOME came in…:P Good job!
@David: What would T.K. Ryan’s classic strip TUMBLEWEEDS look like in your hands? Just wondering… ’cause that’s my favorite strip of all time!
@David: I noticed, just forgot to mention. I agree with Ruben: GNOOOOOOOME!!!
I would have totally understood the entire message in her interpretations.
….the message was boobs.
…and I think our spygnome is in shock.
Huh? Where’d that gnome come from? He wasn’t there before!
So David, maybe you can, um, have a live show for LoB in interpretive dance form?
I tip my hat to that crafty gnome–hidden in the B&W version until Don’s colors revealed him.
Whew. 86 comments now. I hope David doesn’t break the internet.
@David: Today’s “Lio” has a joke similar to the one from Friday’s “Gee’s Journal”, in case you might be interested.

“Grandpa’d do whatever he could…….”
