Somehow the *punch* of the last panel doesn’t work for me, maybe because it feels as cramped as in the castle … I dunno. Clearly, you needed room for exposition in the first two panels but I have a feeling that if the first two panels were narrower offset by a panoramic last panel, it might have helped capture the shock of instant transport …for me, anyway. Maybe the colorization will help.
I congratulate Don Kuehn for his choice to darken the castle walls from his previous pallet. That helped to mitigate my original critique.
Like doubledcomics, I also enjoyed the blotches of white in the last panel. Was that Don’s inspiration or David’s? It would be interesting, I think, to know how you two collaborate on LoB.
Old_Crow – Some of the time David will give me brief directions for coloring the strip like “Make the dungeon walls dark, but not too dark” or “Add some glowy magic like thingy in the second panel”. He also has included color references for new characters or costumes (like the recent strips).
Then there are a few strips when the emails start flying back and forth with questions/ideas.
For this strip, David said he wanted a “just beamed in” effect, so I threw in a glowing particle effect and he said that was just what he was picturing.
The other times David just let’s me color the strip (as long as I keep it looking consistent) as I want to.
I like to think that he gets the same joy out of seeing the strip colored that we do when there is a new strip posted.
Thanks, gang! Yeah, the color really made the strip work in the final piece. When one thinks in ter,s of the color from the beginning, it sometimes isn’t “complete” until the color is added! Big hand for Don, who does a GREAT job coloring LoB!
And sorry for the delayed response – I’ve been sick most of this week, and only now getting back to “normal.” (whatever that is)!
Old_Crow: I love your questions and suggestions!
Thank you, Don. I’m glad that David gives you some freedom too. If your direction on the last panal was “just beamed in,” then you did wonderfully. I am fortunate to be here early enough to see the illustrations and then a day later, I get to see the color version. And if the colors add more to the story/humor, as they did in this strip, I am doubly blessed.
Thank you, David. I am loving your comic. I am thinking about trying to re-energize your forums with some fresh posts. After reading each strip, I find these comment spaces too small to say everything I’m thinking. For instance, this exchange we’ve just had is better suited for a messageboard. We’ll see if I get some gumption going.
Really like the new site design, seem to be experiencing an odd bug though. I’m getting all of the comments to this page in my RSS feed along with the news post but not the comic. Have the feeds got switched?
AWESOME as always my Friend!!!!!!!

Hey! Monday morning quarterbacking IS easy!
Great save, David! Not only did you get out of the corner you wrote yourself into but you did it in a way that amazed your characters!
aannndddd it’s on!
Ha,ha,ha. POOF! Much better than energizing in and out.
kinasha sinkta: How do you even pronounce it! Or, That was easy enough!
“supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” Even though the sound of it
Is something quite atrocious
If you say it loud enough
You’ll always sound precocious
hm well i gotta say this comic rox. And I love the art!!
OOOooooooh. I wanna do that.
…are they saying “kitchen sink” or am I dyslexic?
Either way, it’s funny.
REALLY nice colour job! Especially the spell-dots in the last panel.
doubledcomics – Thanks!!
SPARKLY!!!! Finally, we get back to the outdoors! You can almost SMELL the fresh ink!
Yeah, this one didn’t seem to work until color was added.
