Ok, Legend of Billers, hypothetical question… what would youĂ‚ think if something mysterious and earth-shattering happened, and Bill and the gang were somehow whisked into an alternate reality… in SPACE? Legend of Bill … suddenly in a science fiction theme… Bill, Frank, Gina, even the Dark Queen … what say you? I’m only asking… while writing strips for 2009, something keeps happening (the fun in writing comics is sometimes being as surprised as anyone at what transpires) … it seems the Dark Queen keeps casting a very ugly spell that even she can’t control… I want your input! I invite you to comment right here in this post! Hm … maybe I should draw the image that keeps coming to mind. And I’m not saying it WILL happen, I’m just saying, a “Mirror Universe” beckons… and Lord knows I intimately know my science fiction, too…

Well, for one, Gina and the Dark Queen will be a lot colder…
I imagine Bill will have a broad laser-sword (like a wide lightsaber) and Frank will be a spunky, dragon-esque alien instead of a full-fledged dragon. Beyond that, things would probably be the same, except with spaceships instead of just walking.
An interesting thought.. that’s for sure… although I do enjoy them a bit more on the “grounded” side of things… how would you explain “space” to them considering the time that they live in with “candle lit” lanterns, ect… that definitely could have your work cut out for you though!
Thanks, guys! Danny, I will say that Frank will ALWAYS remain a dragon.
Hm … I just keep thinking about this, not sure what I’ll do… but am curious to hear what others think here!
Ha! David, you ‘ld sci-fi nerd. Can’t stay away hmmm! Like Danny wrote, they all might have to wear lots more clothing and would DQ suddenly be “Nice!!!”. Could we handle that?? Maybe put up a “teaser” to get us some more to think about. Frank looking like Jabba the Hutt?? Nooooooo! or Chewbacca (Forgive spelling don’t know how to spell them).
I kind of like good ol’ fashion medieval LoB myself, but the fact is that you’ve got to tell the story that YOU want to read. This stuff is too much work not to have fun with it. Now what might be interesting (and this may be what you are thinking) is doing some alternate universe stuff off and on. In other words don’t change the strip completely and alienate your fan base, but have your own little “space man spiff” adventures here and there to break things up and let you geek out.
Just my thoughts. I’ll be reading regardless haha.
YES!! THIS is the kind of feedback I’m wanting. Thank you. Keep it coming!
Josh, your points are excellent. Funny, I was thinking of a “Mirror Universe” sort of thing, but the funny thing? I haven’t decided on this yet… I have actually written strips through SUMMER and know exactly what and where the gang are going, and I LOVE how it transpires (hope you will, too). I just suddenly kept thinking in sci-fi terms too… as an alternate storyline. Hm … still thinking… but don;t get me wrong, I am in NO WAY abandoning or even considering my beloved fantasy/medieval theme, not by a long-shot! I love it too much. It’s only a temporary idea that hasn’t fully formed, and may not (the sci-fi idea). keep it coming, folks!
It could work – remember Phillip K. Dick’s The Dragon and The George? This would be a mirror/reversal of that idea too, where the folks from the “past” suddenly have to cope with a society on a whole different level of technology. Whole lot of gags inherent in Clarke’s dictum that technology is equivalent to magic, too… I say go for it!
Legend of Bill…in space?!?! haha, this sounds too funny to believe!! i would love to see it!!
Wow, LOB in Space..I’m intriqued by how this would look. You know David how fanatical I am about Sci Fi and space adventures..But I also like that LOB is grounded in simplier, barbaric and really more magical times. Perhaps you could have the Dark Queen beam (ha) Bill, Frank and Gina away occasionally for an adventure..Whatever you desice to do we’ll love..It’s your strip but I do hope we get to see more of the Dark Queen occasionally..
Wow, your comments are absolutely wonderful. Is there any question Legend of Bill readers are the greatest in the world? Thank you SO much for your honest opinions, it’s EXACTLY what I was looking for. It’s funny… a word that some of you have mentioned keeps resonating with me that I agree with … “grounded.” Yes, that is exactly somehting I love about LOB… it’s grounded in wonderful fantasy and magic and all the things I love in this genre. I admit, I am leaning towards not doing the space thing (I was never really leaning INTO it anyway, I was just thinkin’), and continuing the journey of our intrepid gang through their realm, which I have written for a LOT. I’m working on a map and some other goodies. Know what? Bill and the gang will remain as they are… for now.
(bwah-ha-ha (insert evil craggy laugh of old wicked sorcerer). And as always, your comments and interactivity are vital and welcome here in our realm, yes, OURS! Happy New Year, Legend of Billers. – David
Colleen – your point was EXCELLENT! Being a big Philip K. Dick fan, I loved your analysis. Thank you!
btw – our 2009 goal – to GROW LOB and spread the word! Onward, soldiers!
David-
You could always bring your space characters to LoB. Like the TOS Halloween episode where Kirk and company were in the castle & ran into the alien Witch and Warlock. Star trek visited many planets with ancient civilizations. Frank would make a good Gorn! Is LoB taking place on earth? Could it have a sister planet that is more advanced or has character doubles of LoB on it in a similar setting what with a little more technology? Could the dark Queen accidentally teleport them into another dimension? What ever you do I’m sure it will be entertaining keep it up.
Dan
it could be like the Flintstones meet the Jetsons kind of thing also, I love the fact that LOB is so grounded, but even magic can go haywire some time and have strange and weird results. just my two cents…..
I prefer the more traditional sword-and-sorcery silliness … not so hot on sci-fi scilliness. But, as Josh mentioned, this is your story. If there is a good reason for having the troop go into space, it could work.
And remember, as Arthur C. Clarke said, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistiguishable from magic.” If Bill comes up against anything he doesn’t understand, he’ll just figure it’s magic. Of course, this means that he will probably want to marry the food dispenser … mmmmm cooooookieeeeess……
